Upholstery Fabric Cleaning Code

Have you ever wonder what all the cleaning codes mean? There are quite a few of them, and if you don't know it, do not worry. Here are the cleaning codes for all upholstery fabrics along with the detailed descriptions. Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service is always recommended.

These cleaning codes are the result of test methods conducted by fabric manufacturers in accordance to the Joint Industry Standards Committee. These cleaning codes do not imply and/or guarantee the clean ability of any fabric or method.  
 
 Code     Cleaning Instructions 
 F      Dry clean using petroleum solvents or fluorcarbon only.  Excessive water-based or detergent-based might cause excessive shrinkage.  Water stains might become permanent.  Frequently brush or vacuum to prevent buildup.  Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.
 P  Dry clean using solvents. Excessive water-based or detergent-based might cause excessive shrinkage.  Water stains might become permanent.  Frequently brush or vacuum to prevent buildup.  Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.
 S  Clean with pure solvents that are petroleum distillate-based products.  Excessive water-based or detergent-based might cause excessive shrinkage.  Water stains might become permanent.  Frequently brush or vacuum to prevent buildup.  Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.
 SW  Clean with water-based cleaning agents, foam or pure solvents that are petroleum-based.   Frequently brush or vacuum to prevent buildup.  Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.
 W      Clean with water-based cleaning agents, foam or pure solvents that are petroleum-based.   Frequently brush or vacuum to prevent buildup. 
WS      Clean water based stains with water based cleaning agents.  For oil based stains use a solvent cleaners.   Cleaning by a professional furniture cleaning service only is recommended.
WW      Use water-based agents only.  Do not use solvents.  Gently remove stains by blotting or handwashing.  Do not use excessive brushing or rubbing.
X      Clean by lightly brushing and vacuuming only to remove dust and particles buildup.
